Maatran movie review

        Surya, K.v Anand and Harris jeyaraj...who gave magical hit movie Ayan...turned out this time with Maatran...a story about conjoined Twins with a social message...one of the biggest  movie of the year in south India .....comes out with tonnes of expectation..but frankly speaking..this movie too falls short of it...

Story

       Genetic scientist (Sachin) with his testing on her wife( Tara) fails and she gives birth toConjoined twins named Vimalan( Suriya) and Akhilan(Surya) where they live with one heart..They grow with contrast characters as vimalan interested with Bharathiar and Jipran..soft spoken and Akhilan interested with girls, nightouts and pubs . Russian translator( Kajal) and Olga a Russian jouranlist make friendship with Twins and soft vimalan falls for Kajal..Though Sachin an genetic scientist , not recognised in the country..he establishes himself as successful entrepreneur with childrens Energy drink which has rapid growth in the market in span of year...

    Volaga, the USSR journalist tries ( every competitor) tries to steal the formula from sachin but alas he finds and even kills them in the name of his special security wing...Vimalan comes to know that his Father business has something wrong..and Olga conveys the truth about the Energion drink and its danger to the children in long run..But Olga is killed and Vimalan comes to know and has a pendrive..which has all the truth about the business..Vimalan accuses his father for the death..and sachin orders the security officer to bring back the pendrive without harming their sons in the name of theft....In the fight Vimalan dies and his heart is transplanted to Akhilan

      Now Akhilan feels lonely without his lovely brother and takes the warmth of Kajal and she too wooed by Akhilan...All goes well, Akhilan takes up the business of his father , Sachin relaxes with the truth hidden..but one fine day, Akhilan comes to know all the truth about his father and reason for  the death of brother..He and kajal goes to Russia , digging the fact about the ingredient in energy drink...there too some body follows them and they caught red handed with Russian army research officers..there Akilan meets a doctor, few USSR athelets and scientist ..listens to the flashback how that ingredients was  found ..who is behind it...with some formulic papers he comes to India,  saves the country and childrens by killing the culprit..Yaapaaaa..Confusing last 20 min...

Strengths

                Suriya as Akhilan and Vimalan has done his homework ...excellent variations has been shown by the actor with both characters..that too Akhilan, fun loving guy steals the show with some funny lines and antics...Love scene in the theatre is a scream..Surya excels pretty good in humour and stunts...talented actor comes with another feather in the cap...Kajal Agarwal character is not etched well but she plays the Russian translator girl with  pride and fun..she is beautiful in micro-minis and especially gorgeous in songs...Sachin Kedakar, another actor who is equally good and few scenes he takes over suriya too..Terrific and shocking performance by him as genetic scientist. Tara,  and other cast does good.

             Stunts are rocking..Peter heins is the man behind the fights ..that too Pre interval fight in theme park is quite brilliant. all the stunts are good in the movie. Photography by soundara rajan is in perfect sync with the movie..it is rich and grandeur..the song Nani Koni deserves special mention for the photography and locations..Editing is okay and Harris Jeyaraj songs plays big time show with Maatran.." Rettai kathirey", " Theeya" , and "kaal muliatha" are cathcy and foot tapping but melodious one is missing..BGM adds tempo...Story and plot of the movie is fine.Subha and partners dialogues are refreshing ..first half is good with few good scenes

Weakness

         The story and the concept is fine ..but Maatran fails in the execution part..the second half of the movie is the spoilsport..big time logic loops ... holes damages maatran..

1. What is conjoined twins aspect doing with the story? nothing related with narration? may  be a marketing Gimmick!!!
2. We dont feel the pain when his brother dies...there is lack of scenes in the emotional bonding of twins..
3. What is kajal character? they say a Russian translator..where did she come from?
4. The movie revolves aroung the conjoined twins? or Genetic engeneering? son-father relationship? USA-USSR war? or Adultration?...confusion in terms of narration...
5. Even though Suriya gets all the details about the ingredients, why he needs to go to Russia to find the truth?
6 The Atheletes who consumed the sachin's find are now into medical research..and they can easily seen by suriya in the  bathroom??do they keep this secrets like childish one?
7 Akilan character cries in a song and feels for his brother in few shots..but all the time he makes fun and excited..even dancing with Kajal in critical situation to avenge his brother death?does he did feel guilty about his brother death?
8 Mother love left  halfway...Sachin wants to kill his both sons at the birth, because he says it is flop research, why would he put big effort in bringing up the twins, shows mercy and love toward them??not justified..
9 At the climax..his father runs away in car with reg TN 09 7447, where surya and police lands in gujarat to arrest him...when surya ask the policemen about the above car , the officer says it is Gujarat minister car!!!!! eppadi pa ippadi.....
10 The doctor who can cure the problem is easily met by surya and kajal after few arguements with Russian officer and they escape easily from the army place..with some rocket launcher attacks and guns...USSR is know for its army and spy work!!!...they are shown like dummy people.????
11.  Finally, why suriya wants to take a similar line of genetic thing, as he did that in the last movie 7 aam Arivu, and climax scene where suriya gets Certificate from the president and queue of childrens standing in the line to gets the alternated cure ...similar came up in the 7 aam arivu too..

             K.V anand . story and plot ,,till first half is good but tumbels later...dull and lethargic handling of screenplay lets down..But other wise the underground work on twins concept, Atheltes and their nations war , suriya's superb performance, Cute kajal , breath taking locations, energetic music and photography with amazing VFX this Maatran is not a bad one but not good too..

Verdict: 4/10( 1 for Suriya, 1 for photography and performances, 1 for songs, 1 for fights and plot)
