Sura 50th movie of Illayathalapathi Vijay is the biggest summer 2010 movie with Tammanna, latest kollywood sensation, Vadivelu comedy samrat, favourite music director of vijay Manisharma and sun pictures taking up the project was riding on lot of expectations. But again Our Illaya thalapathi has given a usual commercial entertainer with mindless script and routine punches. Illaya Thalapathi needs to be little Careful in selecting the story and script.
Story
The story starts in a sea shore where 60 fisherman have been lost. 59 men have been saved and one has not been found. In between the confusions our hero Sura(Vijay) swims in ocean and come back to shore where all people are happy and there comes a opening song.
Sura is honest and gutsy fisherman lives with his mother who is do- gooder for his yaazh nagar(sea side kuppam)village people. He is pet and thalaivan like men for his village.
In the mean time Tamanna (a college girl) falls in love with Sura has she got attracted by his good qualities. Every thing goes well until a Andhra real estate goon approaches our villian minister Samuthira raja(dev gil) to evacuate the kuppam people has they are trying to construct a water theme park. Samuthira raja being a minister also involved in smuggling, kills those Andhra goons and tries to occupy the place .
There comes the problem. kuppam people are difficult to evacuate and they try to kill Sura who is against their project . So, the Villian makes the yaazh nagar into ashes by burning all the houses and tries to convince people by giving some amount ,shift to some other area. Sura comes alive from the burnt house like a phoenx, knows about the incident and the culprit minister. He challenges the minister that their people will not shift and will build all 1400 houses in six months.
He smuggles the goods from Villian and become a rich man in overnight. The rest is cat and mouse game. At last Villian dies and the ending is happy with Tammanna and Vijay marriage with all new houses built.
Strength
Ultimately Our illaya thalapathi Vijay as Sura is the major highlight of the movie as he takes the whole movie with his shoulder. He make the audience and fans happy with humour, love, action, sentiments, punches, scintillating dance moves(watch out for the breath taking dance!!!!!!!!! moves in post interval songs). He is perfect has Sura. But Vijay!!!!!!!!! some time it feels routine interms of the dialogues and scenes.Tamanna is treat to watch with a humour touch character in the movie. She is beautiful & glamorous in songs and also dances well.
Vadivelu makes you laugh most of times and irritates in some scenes. Devgill makes a perfect debut as villian against vijay. Songs are not that great but still the pick of the album is "thanjavur jillakari" & "naan nadanthal". Songs are well-picturised and the BGM keeps the tempo. Camera by Ekambaram is excellent especially the sea shots. Some scenes are pretty interesting. Special kudos the dance choreographers and kanal kannan for making racy stunts.
Weakness
The movie seems to have no logic. lot of scenes are mindless and looses continuity. Though the lead pair chemistry is good, the love between them is not justified. The person who has ambition of building home to the kuppam people smuggles good from villian is okay.., but why should he buys a Audi car worth 1cr rupee n not swift or ford ?????why cant he spent that amount for building house. How come the 1400 houses built with 3 months time????why does all vijay movie now days concentrating on ganja scenes?(pokkiri,ATM, Villu ) lot of questions had to be answered by the director.
His calculation was only vijay and not the story or logic. punches are okay but when it gets routine even fans gets irritated. Editing was sloppy and the Dialogues are not catchy. Repeat scenes and the character make you feel that already seen in previous vijay movies vettaikaran, villu, kuruvi etc.... S.P Rajkumar direction is below average and had not utilized the stars to the core.
Finally, the 50th movie of Vijay falls in to another commercial potboiler movie category and nothing special apart from the dance moves, camerawork. Our Thalapthi Vijay needs to concentrate on screenplay and the story. Vettaikaran was far better and racy then the last 4 movies including sura. Being distributed by Sun pictures Sura may enjoy a good run in summer.
Verdict: 4.5/10(1.5 for Vijay, 1 for dance, 1 for Tamanna & songs, 1 for camera and stunts)
Movie canvas punch: Sura attack is not sharp but blunt.
