Story
Pettai karan(jayabalan) is the king of Rooster fights. He is kinda of experinced and has name in the district as no one has won him against the Rooster fights. His long time enemy Rathnam-a police inspector too involves in rooster fight for long decades and only ambition is too win pettaikaran in rooster fight which is prestige issue for his long family generation. Pettaikaran has Ayub, durai(kishore) and karuppu(dhanush) a loyal workers who has great respect to Pettaikaran.
Rathnam challenges pettaikaran for a saval but he back foots himself convincing their members that he will do anything for the win. In middle, Karuppu falls in love with Irine(Tapsee) an anglo indian living in the city whose parents planning to settle in Australia but she refuses to leave the lovable-born place. Initially, Irene refuses but slowly her heart longs for love in the name of friendship with Karuppu. Finally, Rathnam tries to enter into Pettaikkaran hut trying to get his man to his side but miserably fails. Rathnam then kills Ayub in a planned accident which raises the anger of Pettaikaran, leads to cup match.
In the selection process, karuppu rooster is rejected by Pettaikaran. But karuppu believes his rooster and he puts that one to the fight series in the tournament without the intimation of his saviour pettaikaran. He too critizise the rooster quality, but his words went wrong has karuppu won all the three finals with Rathnam and wins the trophy. This leads to the people speculation and names karuppu as next pettaikaran. This creates a big difference in the relationship of Karuppu-Pettaikaran-Durai though karuppu is loyal too his guru. Pettaikaran thinks this has image and self-esteem issue, plays the trio game in karuppu love life and career. Has Karuppu comes to know about his guru? Durai and team of people anger over karuppu as sought outyor not?
Strengths
Vettrimaran, the director has to be given a heart warming bouquet for dealing a story of human's relationship, anger, ego in the background of the rooster fight land approached very realistically. His dialogues, direction brings Madurai in front of the audience. Roosters care, training, food, cleaning injuries of the rooster in the fights, are never seen/told detaily in the screen before.Very well said ....Mr Vettrimaran. Dhanush as karuppu is treat to watch as he looks like a real Madurai native. His looks, costumes, word delivery, body movements ...in the cock fight, love scenes with Tapsee are top class. His home work is visible in every scene in the movie.
Tapsee is right cast for anglo Indian and passes the acid test in kollywood. Kishore,a another memorable role as Durai impresses the audience. other castings are theatre artist scores easily in their part. But it is Jayabalan, the pettaikaran is awsome, given ...sorry!!!!lived as pettaikaran in the movie. Be it his agony shared with Dhanush or turns all the problem to him, damages karuppu image with Tapsee..is adra sakkaiiiiii. !!!!.Photography is faboulous and the night shots are beautifully capturised.
G. v has again made it with his songs and background. Being "Yathe,Yathe", " Nanju alayuthadi" is the pick of the lot though the songs remind his previous movie Veyil.Editing is good.Over all a movie well told again in the temple town of Tamilnadu with sun pictures backing up, it will be a hit movie.
Weakness
Post interval scenes are diverted a little from screenplay, which test your patience. cheeky graphics in cock fights could have been avoided...made it real one, would be a feast. Lot of madurai movie hangover in kollywood is distraction
Verdict: 5.5( 1.5 for dhanush, 1 for kishore,Jayabalan &cast,1 for music, 1 for DOP and 1 for Direction and the theme)
Movie canvas punch: Aadukalam.....pongal Aaaaattam
